I\u2019m riding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskarailroad.com\/ride-a-train\/our-trains\/aurora-winter\">Aurora Winter Train<\/a> for the 12-hour trip from Fairbanks to Anchorage.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/9688745084a5b4db7ed33b4a2845ee34\/2ef391b7f8834c22-37\/s540x810\/839c9172aa8ba5f150ad99dbb26a393fdb15b6ca.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>My traveling companion has also joined me. We\u2019ve found our seats, and I watch the other passengers board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you seen any bears?\u201d a woman asks\u00a0a couple sitting a few rows ahead of and across the aisle from me.<\/p>\n<p>The couple laughs, shakes their heads, perfectly synchronized as if they were one body with two heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe only saw a badger or something like that,\u201d the questioner chuckles before continuing down the aisle to her seat.<\/p>\n<p><i>(Unbeknownst to her, we\u2019d see a bear later in our journey. I have no pictures of the bears, moose, caribou, bald eagles, and other wildlife we saw because they were so quick to leave as the train rumbled by.)<\/i><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-embed tmblr-full\" data-provider=\"youtube\" data-orig-width=\"356\" data-orig-height=\"200\" data-url=\"https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fembed%2FnqAsinHuaE0\"><\/figure>\n<p>A few minutes ago, we pulled out of the station in Fairbanks. So much to see! Don\u2019t want to look away for even a minute. 12 hours? Will I really watch for that long?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>(Yes, yes I will!)<\/i><\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"960\" data-orig-height=\"1280\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/c7c7aa34cb6ed260ad0afef8d1e9569f\/2ef391b7f8834c22-20\/s540x810\/579853d9ff0276de667779ba6a727f9926ed666b.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"960\" data-orig-height=\"1280\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Running moose. Snowy Alaskan Range. Rivers. Bridges. So much to see; I can\u2019t write about it all. I must watch out the window!<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/478f64ad01e4b5192016a98de8ec7c95\/2ef391b7f8834c22-20\/s540x810\/3d73a435b4526d5c6eb6ae5fb7579afd5d4722f2.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Quick stop in Denali brought longing and disappointment that I hadn\u2019t worked it into my stay.\u00a0\u201cWould\u2019ve, should\u2019ve, could\u2019ve\u201d filled my head.\u00a0But I chose. I chose to forego Denali in part because most of it was still closed, and I was heeding the call of the fjords.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/7a452e06b381af2a172bf8ba262db5c7\/2ef391b7f8834c22-d7\/s540x810\/54f6874da0414b54280e5a652903e74e20c74220.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>So much to see! I have to stop writing to look up periodically. South of Denali now. Low gray clouds cover peaks. About half snow, half dark gray brown.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/6ebc8b42641682512ac5286dbb4da6ba\/2ef391b7f8834c22-e7\/s540x810\/0513608378eb235e86ff91191cf46e69cff9cb8b.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Intermittent anxiety today. First about getting on the train. What if I got motion sickness? Now about I don\u2019t know what. The train is comfortable; much more so than I\u2019d expected. It\u2019s peaceful, at least half empty.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/1078a7a03282b8bcb1ffcc7d59e9e7e6\/2ef391b7f8834c22-15\/s540x810\/e2d713c8cd7b0764f5aa76d361608d6fe9b2bce1.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019m enjoying myself, just watching out the window. I can simply be. Watch. Could someone be up there? I know there are bears. Where are they? Are they camouflaged?\u00a0Questions. Imagination.\u00a0Each piece of landscape different from the last.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/4eca6c4d2a4610f2c1b257ad9e2bdb91\/2ef391b7f8834c22-1b\/s540x810\/718401ed98c8946007811c50ba92bc27faf36d3c.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>After a quick stop in Talkeetna, we\u2019re called to the dining car for dinner. Monkey suggests that I order the Caesar salad, so that\u2019s what I do. The woman in white sitting in front of me orders a meat dish, and the woman across from us with dreads orders the curry. We chat over dinner. The woman in white is from Florida, and she\u2019s also traveling alone. The woman with dreads is from Pennsylvania and has been visiting a friend who works in Denali for a week. I enjoy our conversations about traveling alone, previous and future travel plans, and the beauty of Alaska.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/afcce47bdca80cea4e06559b57d1b290\/2ef391b7f8834c22-61\/s540x810\/95914255f5bff60311dd3282a3c2270767ebc3f7.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>During dinner, the train\u2019s been getting ever closer to\u00a0to Anchorage. I realize that I\u2019ve forgotten to look close, on the ground. The vast expanse of sky, clouds, hills, and mountains have pulled my attention to the far away. I\u2019ve forgotten to look right outside the window.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/64.media.tumblr.com\/566ff886056d1172b71e5e6e0dca3618\/2ef391b7f8834c22-9c\/s540x810\/bb3aee2ea9295dee80ccc06946ea97310eaa58ca.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1280\" data-orig-height=\"960\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Arriving in Anchorage, I walk to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copperwhale.com\">Copper Whale Inn<\/a>, my home for the night. The women who own the place greet me as I walk in the door, and inform me that they\u2019ve upgraded my room because no one else is there tonight. I head up the stairs and unlock the door to this beautiful view of Cook Inlet. \u201cPerfect,\u201d I think. <i>(Note that I took this picture at about 8:30pm. See how light it is?)<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I take a deep breath and settle in for a good sleep before continuing my adventures tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is train day.
